Enjoy Fine Italian Wine & Cuisine in Tuscany
Of all the tours that women love, this has to be the most appealing. Tuscany is gorgeous in a hill-rolling rustic way, it’s like stepping into a movie screen to a make believe world of castle-topped villages, walled medieval townships and sleepy hamlets lost between vineyards.
The cities in this region of Italy are legend, keeping their historic charm and uniqueness in this fast moving world… Florence, Lucca, Pisa and Siena are a pleasure to visit, the ‘old towns’ traffic free and stuffed with artistic heritage. A history book experience with a priceless works-of-art on almost every corner: Catholic cathedrals classed as the best in the world, Roman bridges and moats, church spires and cloisters, statues and fountains in fascinating piazzas, fresh food markets and delicatessens, and the much photoed Leaning Tower of Pisa.
Feeling breathless? Relax as you’re taken on a meandering journey down country lanes, the patchwork fields of Tuscany fading away in hues of green and yellowy brown, dark cypress on the horizon, stone manors dotted around. Stop off to see the iconic villages – San Gimignano, Pienza, Volterra, Montalcino, and Montepulciano, each one worthy of a photo shoot.
Then enjoy Tuscany’s fruits of the land, taste the wines at a Chianti bodega, the cheeses, meats, Mediterranean vegetables, pastas drizzled in pure olive oil… and as evening draws in, dress to dine in elegant style on a terrace under the moonlit Tuscany skies on the most exquisite Italian cuisine.
You can do all this on your own and a road trip is good if you love driving, although it’s stressful to find somewhere to park. A tour coach can be disappointing and hectic when you’re herded through the main attractions, taken to a mediocre pizzeria heaving with holidaymakers, and left to recover in a mundane hotel. Personally, I’ve ‘done’ Tuscany on a scooter and though it was fun, this delectable girls-only vacation is top of my bucket list for summer 2024.
And the most important tip? Italian ice-cream is to die for, try some real ‘gelato’ while your there!
What to See & Do in Tuscany
- See the historical Renaissance heritage of Florence
- Brunelleschi’s Duomo Cathedral & the Bapistery ‘Gates of Paradise’
- Uffizi Gallery, Pitti Palace and Accademia Gallery (Statue of David)

- Walk the ancient walls encircling the Medieval city of Lucca

- Visit the Chianti vineyards & wineries
- Experience local cuisine: Learn how organic olive oil and cheese are made, hunt truffles, make pizza and pasta, bake Italian breads
Glamorous Venice Female Trip
Venice has always been dubbed as a romantic destination, but girls it’s much more than this! A medieval water city which has inspired artists and novelists, playwrights and movie-makers across the centuries, now is the time to discover the magic of Venice on a glamorous female trip.
Push the gondola out for this once-in-a-lifetime female trip and enjoy an immersive Venetian experience, in glamorous movie-star fashion. Arrive in style by water taxi, as you’ll be staying in the heart of Venice in a canal-side medieval palace. Yes, this is an authentic 17th century Italian Palazzo, luxuriously fitted and with lots of the original details.
While solo travel is fun, and travelling Italy is safe and easy, a meet-up with a small group of like-minded women is the perfect way to enjoy Venice. Lunch in a Lagoon Island winery, afternoon tea on the terrace of the oldest café in Europe, cocktails on a rooftop with sunset views, dinner by the waterside, this is your chance to taste the real Venice and local recipes cooked in the traditional way.
Spend 2 days in Venice, exploring the atmospheric waterways, historical piazzas, and a multitude of heritage sites listed by UNESCO. St Mark’s Cathedral, the Grand Canal and Rialto Bridge are no doubt the most famous. Our local lady guide has sourced some unusual things to do, including an exclusive gondola ride with the only female gondolier in Venice.
Board a vaporetto for a trip over to the Venice Lagoon Islands. Take a private tour of a traditional glass factory on Murano, and have a go at making a blown-glass unicorn or other delicate creature. Then hop over to Burano, the photogenic island where colourfully painted fishermen’s homes border narrow canals. It’s hardly surprising that Venice, in it’s entirety, is the most instagrammable place in on the planet.
My favourite destination in the world, Venice is totally unique and a must-see on your solo travel bucket list.
What to See & Do in Venice
- See the Medieval heritage of Venice
- St Mark’s Cathedral & Bell Tower
- 17th century palaces and mansions where the aristocracy lived
- Enjoy a walking tour through the heart of Venice (the city is traffic-free except for boats!)
- Glide along canals in a shiny black gondola
- Take a selfie on Rialto Bridge overlooking the Grand Canal
- Don’t miss seeing the famous little Bridge of Sighs

- Marvel at picturesque Burano Island
- Sail into St Mark’s Bay at sunset

Beaches and Villages of Amalfi Coast
Tempted by the thought of Italy but looking for a beach destination? Then head down south to the Amalfi Coast. Choose spring or autumn when the sun caresses but doesn’t burn, and there are relatively few tourists around.
It sounds beautiful doesn’t it, but where exactly is the Amalfi Coast? The cliffs of Costiera Amalfitana overlook the Gulf of Salerno in the most gorgeous Mediterranean setting where small towns and villages cling to the hills which frame a succession of beaches. Famed as a jet-setter resort, in fact, the Romans discovered Amalfi as a holiday destination back in the third century BC!
Not surprisingly, the Amalfi Coast is a listed UNESCO site, a rocky landscape of terraced vineyards and citrus groves, pasture meadows, and wooded hillsides. Make the southern resort of Praiano your home for a few days, wake to a sea-view every morning, eat a lazy breakfast in the sunshine, and then set out to explore the treasures of Amalfi.
Ravelo is a Medieval town at one of the highest points. Sip a glass of wine harvested from the local vines while you admire the bird’s-eye view. Drive down to the coastal town of Amalfi itself, wander the picturesque old streets complete with cathedral. A visit to the lemon orchards is the next stop, and a tantalizing lunch of lemony flavoured appetizers with a shot of limoncello.
Pick the fruits of the land with an expert, gather the herbs, seeds and edible flowers, ingredients that enhance Amalfi cuisine. Toss your own salad, make fresh pasta, and cook your own pizza in a wood-burning oven. Tour a winery to learn how the vines grow on the sheer volcanic terrain, and taste the wine with a gourmet dinner complete with panoramic sunset.
Enjoy pool-time and the beaches, one of the top reasons to visit Amalfi after all. Golden sandy bays, rocky coves, black sands, busy beaches with rows of sun-loungers and umbrellas, or secret coves that can only be reached by boat… This is a fascinating area of Italy to explore slowly and independently. However, a female-only small group tour is a lovely and stress-free alternative, if you can only spare 4 or 5 days of annual leave.
What to See & Do in Amalfi Coast
- See the historic towns of Ravello, Positano and Amalfi
- Marvel at the clifftop views over the Mediterranean Sea
- Sail along the Amalfi Coast to a hidden cove
- Relax on Amalfi’s famous beaches
- Visit vineyards and lemon groves (taste the local wine and limoncello)
- Take an Italian cooking class
- Enjoy Amalfi gourmet cuisine
Tour Spain’s Costa Brava & Barcelona City in Exclusive Style
Looking for cultural sites, city lights and pretty beaches in one decadent holiday? Barcelona’s Costa Brava will exceed your expectations. Trendy and laid-back while keeping a traditional charm, this is the coastline of Catalonia which reaches from the popular seaside resort of Blanes right up to the border with France.
Spain hits the top spots as the most-visited country in the world with over 83 million tourists annually, according to the World Tourism Organisation. Second only to France and her ‘belle’ Paris, we attract far more travellers than Italy or the mighty USA. With countless World Heritage Sites such as the Alhambra Palace in Granada, the exotic Spanish Canary Isles, or the sunny fun-filled resorts of Costa Blanca (Alicante) this is hardly surprising.
Even so, why is Barcelona top of our women’s travel must-do list?
It really is easy to see Barcelona city on your own, just wander the streets of the historic quarter (jot down this Barcelona 2 day itinerary as a guideline) to see the famous landmarks, or take one of those open-top hop-on hop-off buses to save your feet.
Barcelona has some amazing architecture which includes the Sagrada Familia cathedral and other masterpieces of world-renowned genius Gaudí. There’s loads of restaurants, street cafés, and nightclubs, a lively seafront and shopping galore.
But wouldn’t you like to do something special, a different and more authentic experience, luxuriously whisked away from the usual crowd?
Mar Pages, from Solo Female Travelers, joins you on this personalised tour of her homeland, for a heli flight over Barcelona city, to her favourite sky bar for cocktails or cava, the best ‘tapas’ bar for aperitifs, and a private dinner party on the beach.
As her Spanish name implies, Mar was born by the sea, right here on the sunshiny Costa Brava, one of the most beautiful stretches of the whole Mediterranean. She leads the way through her lovely land, to castles and monasteries, secret coves and shimmering sands, undiscovered mountain villages, and the top wineries of Catalonia!
What to Do & See in Barcelona
- See the Cathedral and Gothic Quarter
- Visit Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia, Park Güell, Casa Batllo & La Pedrera
- Enjoy a tapas & wine tour
- Take a helicopter ride over the city

Touring Croatia and Montenegro (Dalmatian Coast)
Touring Croatia conjures up summer days lazing by a turquoise sea, a yacht anchored offshore in waters so transparent they look like glass. A morning wander through historic streets of an ancient walled town, to lookout points or rooftop cafés with a bird’s-eye view. Sunset cocktails and warm evenings glamorously having fun. Just add Montenegro into your plans for the perfect holiday!
To put them on the map, Croatia and Montenegro are adjoining countries on the Balkan Peninsula, and part of the European Community. In fact, Dubrovnik is only a 2 hour drive from Budva (approximately 175 km by road) along the South Dalmatian Coast, and the border crossing is straightforward.
Take a road trip from Dubrovnik to see the Pelješac Peninsula, then head south to the Bay of Kotor. The Dalmatian coastline unfolds southwards, revealing crescent-shaped bays and secluded beaches, past vineyards and forests, to little-known villages and world-famed resorts. Medieval cities look over the aquamarine beauty of the Adriatic Sea and a myriad of sun-kissed islands. Idyllic places to visit include Perast, Sveti Stefan, Przno, and Budva.
Although a day-trip from Croatia to Montenegro by car or motorbike is entirely doable, a 7-day tour is the best option. Think about it! Seven days touring the Dalmatian Coast to take in the unmissable historical sites, to lay on warm sands and swim idly, with time to amble along nature trails or cruise to an island, to dine leisurely on traditional cuisine, to enjoy the luxury of exclusive beach clubs.
What to See & Do in Croatia and Montenegro
- See the historic city of Dubrovnik
- Visit Perast, Kotor, Sveti Stefan isle, Przno, and Budva
- Spend a day on one of the iconic islands
- Laze on the beach
- Hike the hills and coastal paths
- Tour the vineyards, taste the wine and seafood
- Join a guided tour to discover local history
- Chill-out at exclusive beach clubs
- Marvel at the views over the Adriatic Sea
Wellness in the Wilds of Iceland
The extreme landscapes of Iceland are like nowhere in the Universe. Europe’s land of the midnight sun has so many unique attractions you’ll just have to come over to see them. Fire spitting volcanoes, black beaches washed by the Atlantic, steaming blue lagoons and icy waterfalls, and the unending wilderness where wild horses roam. The awesomeness reaches breaking point when the Aurora Borealis paints her eerie violet and green glow across the night sky.
Reykjavik is where the magic starts, the most northern capital in the world, on the Atlantic coast! If you like swimming or lazing in water you’ve come to the right place. The Icelanders invented spa life long before it became trendy so there are dozens of thermal pools with hot tubs and saunas around town (the oldest dates to 1937). It may seem crazy to non-Vikings, but you can enjoy an outdoor dip even when it’s snowing!
Iceland equates to volcanic activity, one of the few places where you can safely watch magma flowing over lava fields, on the Reykjanes Peninsula where the fissures on Fagradalsfjall mountain are constantly erupting.
The Blue Lagoon is a ‘wonder of the world’ too, a special place to visit. The vivid blue seawater pools are volcanically heated some 2,000 metres belowground, gushing to the surface with naturally infused minerals that bring rejuvenating benefits.
The south coast holds some of Iceland’s major natural attractions. The Golden Circle is a favourite road trip that takes in Þingvellir National Park and Lake Þingvallavatn, Gullfoss and Skógafoss Waterfalls, the black cliffs of Reynisdrangar and Reynisfjara beach, Geysir and Strokkur geysers. Ultimately, the best experience occurs at the end of the day when the northern lights in Iceland flicker across the arctic sky.
What to Do & See in Iceland
- See lava flowing at Fagradalsfjall
- Chase the Northern Lights
- Swim in the steamy waters of Blue Lagoon
- Capture the beauty of Seljalandsfoss, Gullfoss and Skógafoss Falls
- Stand on the cliffs at Reynisdrangar black beach
- Walk in Thingvellir National Park
- Dive or snorkel in the submerged Silfra rift
- Meet Icelandic horses
- Watch puffins on Mt. Reynisfjall
- Take a whale-watching trip
- Enjoy yoga, meditation and wellness
- View Reykjavik from the panoramic platform on Hallgrímskirkja Church
Looking for a luxury wellness trip that combines morning yoga and raw nature excursions? Then take a peak at the full package details.
Discover Morocco on an Overland Trip
Did you know that the coastline of Morocco is clearly visible from Spain? Yes, the African continent is only 8 nautical miles away from Europe at the nearest point (Strait of Gibraltar)! So close, but such a totally different experience.
Take the kite-surfing paradise of Essaouira, for example, down on Morocco’s breezy Atlantic coast. Kilometres of wild golden beach border the ocean looking rather like the Playas Grandes of Fuerteventura, albeit with camels and horseback riding. The ambience is excitingly distinct from the Canary Island (some 750 km across the sea).
Or the centuries-old medinas, Morocco’s unique historical town centres – the narrow whitewashed streets of fortified Essaouira, the cute façades of ‘blue city’ Chefchaouen, the souks of the walled imperial ‘red city’ Marrakesh. UNESCO lists these medinas among the 9 World Heritage Sites in Morocco.
Ah yes, the souks, North Africa’s tantalizing spice-scented markets! Delve into the bazaars of Marrakesh Medina, a wondrous world of countless little shops stuffed with ornate glass lamps, colourful pottery and babouche slippers, Arabian carpets, silver teapots, and silk scarves, among other exotic treasures.
Watch snake charmers in Jamaa El-fena Square as the day turns to dusk and the Moslem call to prayers sounds hauntingly from Koutubia Mosque in the heart of old Marrakesh. Dine at a rooftop restaurant away from the bustle below. Tagine and couscous are must-try cuisine.
Ultimately, Morocco is the gateway to the Sahara Desert. Envisage a camel ride across the desert sands to a Berber camp, spending the night in an opulent tent under the starriest dark sky, and waking to see the sun rise over the dunes.
Are you apprehensive about going to Morocco as a single woman? Join an all-female group to travel Morocco the easy and comfortable way, with a local female guide to show you the contrasts of her country, the fusion of cultures on a journey from modern-day Casablanca city to the time-honoured homelands of the Berber.

Trekking Mount Kilimanjaro
Want to celebrate International Women’s Day 2024 on Kilimanjaro?
Yes, you’ve read that correctly! An all-women team will be climbing Mount Kili to see the sunrise from the summit on this very special day.
This trek up to the ‘Rooftop of Africa’ is meticulously planned on the shortest and most scenic route, with an emphasis on maximum acclimatization (Africa’s highest peak has an awing 5,895 metre elevation). Apart from having massive fun, the event supports Tanzanian female guides, and contributes to their training. The guide team and porters are determined young women set on carving a career in Tanzanian tourism.
You’ll be hiking the shorter and scenic Shira route which begins higher up the mountain than other trails. It’s an exciting if strenuous adventure with seven nights spent camping under the starry nights of Africa. Don’t worry, there’s hot water for a wash every morning and private portable loos, as well as proper seating in the mess tent at mealtimes!
Highlights include the panoramic vistas along the way and seeing the sun rise over the plains of Africa from the very summit.
On the ascent you’ll be walking through heather strewn moorland up to stony to alpine desert, with distance and trekking time varying each day in relation to altitude acclimation. It’ll be an easy 2 hour trail on the first afternoon, then roughly 5 to 8 kilometres each following day, with a 5 to 6 hour steady climb to reach the summit, and some 5 hours down to Millennium Camp on the penultimate day. The final descent is a more leisurely 13.5 kilometre walk through rainforest.

Penguins on the Ice-Fields of Antarctica & South Georgia
An epic sea journey on the Ocean Diamond across the gelid waters of the Southern Atlantic Ocean from the Patagonian port of Ushuaia at the tip of South America towards the Antarctic Polar Circle, an expedition trip which begins with a voyage to the distant realms of South Georgia.
South Georgia
Have you heard of South Georgia? One of the wildest places on the planet, this icy island rises from the remote South Ocean hundreds of miles from mainland anywhere (calculate 1,300 km from the Falklands or 2,000 km from Ushuaia, Argentina). Known as the ‘Antarctic Oasis’, you’ll not find desert palms or camels on this isolated sub-arctic isle but an immensity of penguin colonies and millions of seals who nest on the glacial shores sheltered by a lofty mountain ridge.
Surrounded by a marine reserve where humpbacks and killer whales play, wandering Albatross come in to rest on their ceaseless flight above the southernmost waters of the world. Meanwhile, the only signs of human life are down by the old settlement in Grytviken ‘Pot Bay’, when the South Georgia Museum is open to visitors in summertime.
Land on Georgia Isle for close encounters with large penguins and to observe the seals, visit the museum, abandoned whaling station and the whaler’s Norwegian Lutheran Church at Grytviken bay. If you’re feeling intrepid, walk the glacier valley trails or venture down ice-walled Drygalski Fiord on an expedition boat.
Our voyage continues to the immaculate untouched white world of the Antarctic Peninsula. Feel the exhilaration of exploring the snow-drenched terrain, trekking across the silent wilderness to a scientific research station, and videoing the antics of cute penguins on a shore landing.
Back aboard ship, a freezing polar plunge is hilarious if you’re brave enough to jump into the mega cold ocean! Relax with a cocktail at the magical hour, as the midnight sun illuminates the iciness with an unearthly golden glow.
What to Do and See in Antarctica & South Georgia
- Embark on a boat expedition to Georgia Island
- Observe unique wildlife: penguins, seals, whales, albatross
- Zodiac excursions and landings
- See extraordinary icebergs and glaciers
- Take an Arctic plunge
- Kayak in the Southern Ocean

- Cross the South Pole (Antarctic Circle)
- Hike in the snowfields
- Visit a scientific research station

*The Ocean Diamond is an authentic Antarctica expedition ship, comfortably converted to take 189 passengers, small enough to get close to the landmasses (dinghies carry you across for landings). This isn’t a mega cruise-liner, it’s a highly personalised, eco-friendly project.
Tiger Spotting in Nepal for Everyone
Meanwhile, continuing with our Chinese Zodiac theme, the luckiest signs in 2024 are ‘Tigers’, ‘Snakes’ and ‘Oxen’ (animals worshipped in Nepal)! Although tiger spotting isn’t on the ‘women-only’ tours list yet, it’s an exciting option for solo travellers.

Finally, you can’t visit Nepal without seeing the Himalayas, whether this is from the comfort of a Pokhara Lakeside resort, walking the Annapurna foothill trails to Poon Hill, a strenuous hike to Everest Base Camp, or to even remoter less-trodden regions of the country towards the mysterious lands of Tibet.

Why choose a women-only tour in 2024?
If you’re a solo female traveller, women only tours are your chance to meet up with like-minded ladies for a few days, journeying to places that are challenging to do alone, or to others in exclusive tours, where female guides not only show you around but give a real insight into their home country. It’s a cool opportunity to share your knowledge and travel stories, to listen and gather ideas for your own future trips.
* Solo Female Travelers is a brand co-founded by Meg Jerrard (the popular ‘Mapping Megan’ Australian blogger who inspired a generation of women to travel the world alone) and Mar Pages (born in Spain, she’s a luxury travel expert who has worked and lived in many of places mentioned). Between them they have travelled most of the planet.
