Visitors to Jumilla can expect an exciting time this August at the traditional Wine Harvesting Festival. The local fiesta to honour ‘Our Lady of the Assumption’ is once again underway!
Ten days and nights of fun-packed entertainment for all the family which includes a fascinating mixture of traditional processions, wine-related festivities, folklore performances, and the Moors and Christians parades.
Three separate festivals rolled into one grand event, Murcia’s historical city of Jumilla comes alive in the height of the summer season and everyone is welcome to join in the fun. The main fiestas kickoff on August twelfth and carry on right until the twenty-first.
If you live within driving distance just go along for a day, otherwise plan your perfect wine trip in advance as accommodation usually gets booked up.
A host of activities are staged for all ages, so bring the family along. Youngsters will love the children’s fancy dress parade – dancing, street entertainment, and showers of sweets and toys.
Jumilla Wine Harvesting Festival
Experience centuries-old viniculture traditions firsthand, from harvesting the vines through to the final parade where the violet liquid flows down the streets… Watch the customary treading of the grapes, discover the magical wine-making process and enjoy tasting the resulting wine.
The ‘gran cabalgata’ has reached international fame – this unique wine parade is the highlight of Jumilla’s festivities. It’s a great chance to taste the various wines, to try the sweet pastries, typical sausages and other local delicacies. Some 70,000 litres of red wine are ‘poured’, some of this literally over spectators!
Jumilla Folklore Festival
In addition to the wine theme, Jumilla holds the National Folklore Festival around these same dates; mainly showcasing folklore from the different parts of Spain, with the occasional participation from other places in the world.
Jumilla Moors and Christians Festival
Finally, but not least, these dates coincide with the annual Moors and Christians celebrations whose origins date back to four centuries ago. A full programme of events and costumed parades which spirit you back to a distant medieval history of invaders from the North of Africa, and the ensuing battles to reconquer these fertile lands for the Spanish Crown.
What to See in Jumilla
As you can see, Jumilla has a tight-packed agenda of activities for August but it’s an interesting place to visit anytime of the year when the pace slows down and you can visit the town at your leisure.
Tour one of the many local bodegas, discover the wine route and vineyards, enjoy the local cuisine and culture, walk around the old town centre to see the historic monuments and churches, climb up to the magnificent castle, or drive into the pine-clad hills for a picnic.
Easter also merits a special mention – Jumilla ‘Semana Santa’ is considered to be of National Tourist Interest, with a history going back six centuries, filled with passion and religious tradition.
